奥本海默生于得克萨斯州奥斯汀，成长于华盛顿特区和新墨西哥州的圣塔菲。先后获得了哈佛大学电影制作艺术学学位，以及中央圣马丁艺术与设计学院的博士学位。
2012年执导的纪录片《杀人一举》入围第86届奥斯卡金像奖最佳纪录片。2014年的《沉默一瞬》获得了第71届威尼斯影展评审团大奖，并再次入围奥斯卡最佳纪录片。
